When we last left off, the party had stuck a big-old stick in a hornet's nest by having a dirty bomb detonation on the edge of town and getting themselves all branded as terrorists. They have subsequently been laying low for a few weeks. As the 24-hour news cycle keeps the story chugging along with ever-increasing cases of radiation sickness, one death has caught particular attention: school lunch-lady and soup kitchen volunteer Georgia Goodman emptied a grenade launcher into a hospital lobby, and was then mobbed and killed by a group of doctors and orderlies. Her motivations for this act are unknown, but opinion is split as to whether she is simply another terrorist, is one of the Fearsome Five, or was mind-controlled by Fearsome Five member — and suspected ringleader — The Amazing Bouncing Ferret.
The police do know one thing: she had a daughter named Glinda. A daughter who was staying at the same hospital, and who is now just coming out of a bout of heavy sedation after she collapsed at school the very day her mother bombed the place.
An officer has turned up to turn over her personal affects to the daughter now that the crime lab is done with them. Among the items is a simple stone disc, inscribed with strange markings. When Glinda picks it up to take a look, she quickly learns just what her mother has been dealing with the last few weeks.
